Introducing our Fire Horse Zine!

Welcome to this riso publication featuring 50 illustrations inspired by the theme Fire Horse. This collection is the result of our latest Open Call, which invited artists from all over the world to submit their own interpretation of the ‘fire horse’; an artwork specifically designed to be printed using risograph. The guidelines were intentionally simple: a fixed colour palette, a set orientation, and horse(s) facing a single direction. 

The theme was inspired by the Chinese horoscope and Lunar New Year celebrations, marking the arrival of 2026: the Year of the Horse. As the seventh animal in the zodiac, and paired with the element of fire this year, the fire horse felt like a powerful and timely symbol. Beyond its astrological meaning, we were drawn to the image as a positive force: one that suggests light, movement, strength, and resilience in the context of the world we’re currently living in.

Horses hold deep cultural significance across many societies, often representing freedom, labour, companionship, and transformation. Seeing how artists from different backgrounds interpret this animal, and its relationship to humans, has been incredibly inspiring. As you move through this collection, we hope you’ll not only appreciate the diversity of styles, but also the many ways the riso technique has been explored and pushed within these works.
