Welcome to the Riso Pop Summer course:
Analogue Techniques for Riso
Kick off your summer with a burst of creativity! Join me for a 5-day course where we’ll spend our afternoons drawing, painting, cutting, and developing vibrant artwork ready for Risograph printing. This course is perfect for anyone who enjoys working with their hands and wants to explore how analogue techniques can be transformed into bold and colorful Riso prints.
No prior experience needed—just bring your curiosity and get ready to play with texture, shape, and color in a relaxed, studio setting.
When and Where?
The course will start on Monday the 21st and will end on Friday the 25th The course will be from 10am to 2pm, so you can also enjoy the rest of your day.
What can you expect?
In this 5-day afternoon course, we’ll explore how traditional techniques—like graphite, ink, and paint—can be used to build texture, depth, and expressive color in Riso prints.
Each session offers hands-on time to experiment with different materials and mark-making methods, helping you understand how analogue artwork can be translated into beautiful, layered Riso prints. You’ll also have time to develop a personal project at your own pace, with guidance and feedback along the way.
The goals of this course are:
• To help you feel confident using the Riso printer
• To explore how drawing and painting techniques translate into print
• To develop a personal project and find your unique voice within the Riso medium
• To enjoy a playful, open studio atmosphere where exploration is encouraged
How is the course set up?
This course is split into two main parts to give you a balance of playful experimentation and focused project work.
Part 1: Experimenting with Materials
We’ll begin by getting to know the Riso printer—how it works, what it can (and can’t) do, and what to keep in mind when preparing artwork for print. Through a series of guided exercises, you’ll dive straight into printing while testing a variety of analogue materials to see how they translate into Riso layers.
Modules include:
The Scanner – Introduction to Riso printing, scanner settings, and understanding how layers work & colour mixing.
Materials Exploration – Experimenting with pencils and graphite, inks and paint for texture development.
Digital Tools (extra) – Using digital software as a supportive tool in your analogue workflow
Part 2: Your Personal Project
Starting on Day 3, you’ll shift your focus to a personal Riso project. Before the course begins, you’ll receive a few prompts to help spark ideas and begin gathering inspiration. These will guide you in thinking about what kind of project you’d like to work on and what’s realistically achievable within the week.
You’ll be encouraged to plan, experiment, and print at your own pace, with support along the way. By the end of the course, you’ll have created a unique series of prints centered around your chosen theme or concept.
Why a this course?
Riso Pop is known for its one-off workshops—great introductions to the world of Risograph printing. But with this longer course, I wanted to offer something deeper: more time, more experimentation, and a more hands-on, personal experience.
As an illustrator, I love working with a variety of materials, and I’m excited to share what’s possible when you step away from digital tools and dive into analogue processes. This course is designed to give you space to explore, play, and discover your own visual voice using tactile, manual techniques.
By returning each day, you’ll have time to settle into your creative flow—free from everyday distractions and without the time pressure of a single-session workshop. It’s an opportunity to slow down, connect with the process, and enjoy printing in a supportive studio setting.
