Recipes for the Everyday
A Guest Workshop with April Gertler
from WIRWIR Publishes
Join us for a special two-day workshop with April Gertler from WIRWIR Publishes, joining us from Berlin for a weekend of creative experimentation, risograph printing and zine making using some bookbinding techniques.
Together, we'll explore the idea of the recipe as a form of instruction, storytelling and exchange. Rather than limiting recipes to food and cooking, we'll consider how the format can be used to communicate ideas, experiences and actions. A recipe could be a set of instructions for a perfect date night, a recipe for friendship, a recipe for activism, a recipe for surviving Monday morning, or a recipe for your favorite pancakes.
Over the course of two half-day sessions, you'll develop your ideas, experiment with image and text, and contribute to a collaborative risograph zine created by the whole group.
You can bring up to two recipes of your own to the workshop, and/or develop your ideas together with the group. We'll explore how different interpretations and approaches can come together to create one collective publication.
And because we're giving ourselves two days, there will be plenty of time to gather ideas, experiment, print and assemble, without having to rush the creative process. Along the way, April will introduce us to her approach to risograph publishing and creative workshops, drawing from her experience with artistic and collaborative projects in Berlin.
We'll also learning how to bring our printed pages together through saddle stitch bonding and turn the collection of recipes into a finished zine.
At the end of the weekend, everyone will leave with 5 copies of the collaborative zine: a little collection of recipes created by the whole group.
What can you expect from this workshop?
Saturday, Sept 19th
10:00 - 14:30
We’ll begin by introducing the project and exploring the possibilities of the recipe format.
Through a series of Riso experiments, we’ll play with colour, texture and layering, while looking at how image and typography can bring your recipe to life.
We’ll also discuss layout and composition, and work on pushing your ideas beyond a straightforward recipe into something visually engaging and personal.
Sunday, April 12
15:00 - 18:00
Once the ideas and layouts are ready, it’s time to get into production!
We’ll print the individual pages on the Riso, then come together to collate, assemble and bind our pages into the final collaborative zine.
By the end of the day, you’ll have a finished publication to take home and share.
