The Day we Saw a Whale at the Beach

The Day we Saw a Whale at the Beach
Part of Summer Travels open call and exhibition.
My artwork is called “the day we saw a whale at the beach”. It draws on childhood memories of beach days in the Highlands of Scotland, when my large family would visit our favourite beach. We liked to walk about half a mile (with a LOT of clobber) to the quieter rocky bays away from the main beach, and set up camp for the day.
I remember colourful damp towels drying on warm rocks, cloud watching, endless sandwiches and hard boiled eggs, sunshine, my brother being the best crab-finder in the world, glowing shoulders and cheeks, and everyone being relaxed.
Perhaps - like little me in the image - I'm wearing rose tinted glasses as I reminisce, but I don’t care, it looks and feels good! The bright riso palette perfectly brings my happy memories to life. I have worked from recent beach sketchbooks and kept my drawings really lively and warm.
