Want to design and print your own holiday cards? This workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to set up files for Riso printing and leave with a festive stack of cards to send to friends and family.
What you’ll learn:
File preparation for Riso printing
Planning cards and file prep for print production
Colour separations and layer setup
Tips to avoid common mistakes and make your holiday cards shine
Once your files are ready, you’ll print your own design on the Riso machine in up to three festive colours. By the end, you’ll take home up to 15 unique cards—ready to post out for the holidays.
You can work with Photoshop, Procreate, or any drawing software you prefer.
Note: This workshop focuses on card design and does not cover photography, CMYK, or faux-CMYK processes.
How will the workshop look like?
Part I — Digital Prep Made Simple (at Home)
Before we meet, you’ll receive a PDF guide and pre-recorded videos where I share my screen and walk you through two different ways to prepare your files for Riso. We’ll cover:
How to set up your layers for 2- or 3-color Riso prints
Smart tips & tricks to avoid common mistakes
Adding textures, overlays, and effects to make your prints more interesting
Exporting your files in the proper format for the Riso printer
You’ll have a few days to work on your design at home and can send it in for feedback if you’d like.
Part II — Print Day! (at the Studio)
Time to bring your design to life! At the studio, you’ll:
See the Riso machine in action
Print your own designs,
Experiment with inks, layering, and registration
Handle the machine yourself and learn how to get the best results
We’ll wrap up the day by showing off everyone’s work and sharing tips and tricks.
What You’ll Walk Away With:
This is where we take your design from screen to print. At the studio, we’ll:
Check your files together to ensure they’re print-ready
Go step by step through exporting correctly for the Riso
Learn how to use the Riso print driver to send your files to the machine
Print your card designs using 2 or 3 colors
Experiment with inks, registration, and overlays to achieve your desired look
And the best part: it’s completely hands-on — you’ll do the printing yourself, from setting up the files to running the machine.
Requirements:
Participants should have Photoshop (or another program that can export PDFs). If you’re working on an iPad Pro, Procreate is recommended.
