Make your 2-Color Riso Animation with Philip Bell!
We’re excited to host this special session with our friend and fellow Riso enthusiast Philip Bell, who is visiting from Chicago. Philip brings a playful, process-driven approach to animation and print, making this a unique opportunity to learn from his practice.
Rather than focusing on complex animation techniques, this session is all about the printing process: how movement, texture, and color come alive through Risograph. Using a custom-built web tool, you’ll transform an existing GIF into printable frames, experiment with color separation, and produce your own short Riso animation.
Prior animation experience, isn't required!
What can you expect from this workshop?
A clear introduction to Risograph printing and its unique aesthetic,
How animation can be broken down into printable frames,
Basics of frame layout and color separation for Riso (1–2 colors)
Hands-on experience using a simple web-based tool to generate print files,
Printing your own animation frames on the Risograph,
Scanning and recompiling your prints into a digital animation,
Tips on using texture, layering, and imperfection to enhance movement.
We’ll wrap up by sharing results, and discussing how these techniques can be applied beyond animation into illustration, zines, and experimental print work.
What you’ll take home:
You’ll leave with both a digital animation and a printed flipbook, featuring your animation as well as flipbooks from the whole group, so you can take a collection capturing the workshop.
