Welcome to the Riso Procreate Workshop!
> An introduction to risograph printing
Hello and welcome to the workshop page! Here you will find resources and videos that will guide you into the world of riso. I hope that the information you find here will help you get a better understanding on how this printing technique works as well as helping you with the creating of your first riso print.
What will you find in this page?
A PDF handout with all the information you need for the workshop,
Short videos that explain how the machine works and how to start with your design in procreate,
And a link to a Pinterest board with inspiration.
I decided to set up a taster workshop specifically for procreate as I see that more and more people are using an ipad - for me it has become a very handy tool for work as well. The application Procreate is really great, it has developed a lot in the last few years; that said, I think there are still things it is missing. These functions are still only available in more complex software such as the adobe programs.
One function that is not yet available is an easy way to convert layers into greyscale. This is why I show you 2 techniques that I have learnt: Screen & Alpha Lock.
But if you find other ways of getting the right results, please share them with the community! This application is very new to the riso world!
For this workshop you will create a design that fits on an A3, and which will be printed in two or 3 colours. You can see here on the right the 10 colours available at Riso Pop.
Please note that colours on a screen look quite different than when printed. This is just to help you visualise your outcome.
You can use your A3 as you like; divide it into two smaller prints or create even more!
Remember that colours can mix to create new ones!
Please note the videos were made with an A4 print in mind, so if printing a poster A3 just check you have the right papers size ;)
Short video to give you an introduction of the risograph machine (3min)
(this video talks about the scanner bed, it’s good to know! We will be using the usb connection to the printer)
Also we have now 10 colours at the studio!

If you had time to finish your design and want to have a quick file check or still want to work on your piece at the studio:
Remember your file has to be 300dpi resolution.
Try to have your layers organised so we can easily edit if necessary.
Are you ready ready and want to print?
Please have files of your final designs saved as PDF in greyscale.
Each file will be printed as one colour > Don’t forget to name file with colour YOURNAME_COLOUR
One reference image full colour.
Bring your charger & apple pen! Seriously, we’ve had surprises before…
Will you print with 3 colours? Please send these before the day of the workshop so we can print the first colour for you!
